I was saddened last night to learn of the death of Sheila Levine, retired Editorial Director of the University of California Press, and the editor responsible for the Press's publication of Encyclopedia of Pasta and Popes, Peasants, and Shepherds: Recipes and Lore from Rome and Lazio. Oretta and I were devoted to her, and the experience of producing a book on her watch was a pleasure and a privilege. We were so happy when she came to Rome en route to Frankfurt the year Encyclopedia of Pasta was published and gamely participated right off the plane in one of those Italian book presentations, followed by a long dinner with everyone else speaking Italian—it was supporting her author way beyond the call of duty.
Our most heartfelt condolences to her family and her colleagues at the Press.
